New Year's resolutions worth keeping

Did you make any New Year’s resolutions this year? Have your broken them yet? Rather than reverting back to old habits and promising yourself you’ll change next year, maybe it’s better to choose resolutions that are truly worth keeping. The Vertica Resident Services blog team presents some New Year’s resolutions worth keeping.

Carve out time to connect with friends and family

Life can get complicated. One thing that's always simple is spending time with the ones you love. It can be tricky to stay in touch and to make the time, but it’s important. It’s fun and it’s also good for us. Try organizing a regular game night or movie night. If time and distance make this impossible, a simple phone call to catch up and share a few laughs (or tears) can make all difference.

Take care of yourself

Are you nice to yourself? Start to become aware of the negative thoughts and feelings you’re having and how they impact your life. Once you become more aware, you can implement strategies to overcome those negative emotions.

Cultivate gratitude

No matter what you are going through, at the end of the day, if you are still breathing, you have something to be grateful for. Before you go to bed every night, make a mental list, or write down an actual list in a journal, of all of the things that you are grateful for. This simple action can help you maintain a big picture perspective and keep you from getting caught up in all the little things. It will also help you get a good night’s sleep.

Practice empathy

Letting go of grudges and negative feelings is easier when you realize that everyone, at some point, struggles in life. We are all doing our best, but sometimes our best isn’t that great. See the world from someone else’s perspective and practice empathy and forgiveness -- for your own sake if nothing else.

Don’t compare yourself to others

In the age of social media, it can be easy to constantly compare your life to someone else’s. This is like comparing your blooper reel to someone else’s highlight reel. Live your life. It’s the only one you’ll ever have.
