How to waste less in 2019

The beginning of a new year always inspire us to start fresh and live more consciously. With plastic overflowing from our waterways and killing wildlife, and landfills struggling to keep up with the discards from our growing population, waste is a huge issue for the environment right now. If you want to be the change in 2019, a great thing to ditch this year is your wasteful habits. The Vertica Resident Services blog team wants to help make it easy for you. Here’s how to waste less in 2019.

Say “so long” to single-use stuff

Despite our reputation as a clean and green country, Canada actually leads the developed world in per capita production of garbage. That may be a tough statistic to swallow, but you can make a big impact simply by changing the way you quench your thirst. In Ontario, the nation’s most populated province, it’s estimated that one billion plastic water bottles end up in landfill each year. Getting exact numbers can be tricky. Stewardship Ontario is the non-profit that runs the Blue Box recycling program in the province. They estimate that 66% of plastic beverage containers get recycled. The Ottawa-based Polaris Institute, however, estimates only 14% of plastic water bottles get recycled.

Coffee is the second favourite beverage for Canadians. It’s estimated that we go through up to 2 billion disposable cups every year. Switching to reusable containers can eliminate your personal contribution to this global issue. You can go even further by extending this to all take-out packaging. Eating in, bringing reusable containers with you when you buy takeout, as well as foregoing disposable napkins, plastic utensils etc, can go a long way.

Say “no” to the dress, and pants, and shirts etc.

“Fast fashion” has lead to an increase in textile waste. The average Canadian throws away 37 kilograms of textiles annually. Almost 10 million tonnes of textiles are sent to landfill each year in North America. Before you by that new outfit, decide if you really need it. Taking stock of your wardrobe, donating what you don’t need and thinking of new outfit combinations for what you already own can help get this number down.

Say “bye-bye” to plastic bags

About 1 billion plastic bags are handed out to Canadians every year. Most are never used again and end up in landfill. Always carry a reusable bag with you. Take it a step further and bring your own reusable glass containers for bulk items.

The Vertica blog team hopes that these simple tips help you get started on your path to producing less waste and inspiring those around you to do the same.
